The Review panel has released an Issues Consultations Paper along with 39 questions for the next round.

Unfortunately the paper brushes off concerns about GM, irradiation and nanotechnology in food and is misleading:

· Section 3.1 of the paper states that GM food must have a label. In fact loopholes in the current food standard means that most GM food escapes labelling. It is estimated that up to 70% of processed food contains GM ingredients. How many GM food labels have you seen?

· Section 3.11 implies that GM, nano-technology and irradiation have no public safety concerns

· Section 3.16 implies that labelling GM, nano-technology and irradiation will cause these technologies to be “inhibited”. This truly bizarre statement prompted MADGE to issue a media release saying “If, as this review suggests, GM, nanotech and irradiation only have a future if they are hidden, consumers need to be extremely concerned.”

Section 2.5 lists the objectives of FSANZ, our food standards agency responsible for food labelling, as:

(a) the protection of public health and safety;

(b) the provision of adequate information relating to food to enable consumers to make informed choices; and

(c) the prevention of misleading or deceptive conduct.

It appears to be failing on all three accounts in reference to GM food, irradiation and nanotechnologies.

There are concerns that if GM food labelling does emerge it will in fact be “non-GM” labelling. This means that ordinary food would need labelling (GM free – 0% GM or non-GM – some GM contamination allowable if accidental) while GM ingredients would be seen to be the norm and so escape labelling. The costs of testing, labelling and also the liability for being sued if food labelled either “GM free” or “non-GM” is contaminated, would lie with any farmers, food manufacturers or retailers trying to produce GM free food.

Please consider putting in a submission to the labelling review Public hearings are being held throughout Aus from March to May. Sign up to attend one here

Sustainable Living Space Project Community Meeting and Retrofitting Workshop – Draughtproof your Home

With Maurice Beinat

Thursday 11 February, 7.00pm – 9.30pm

Draughts occur when warm air rises and is replaced by cooler air entering through cracks and gaps in your home and can lead to big energy bills and while reducing the effectiveness of your home’s insulation.  Effective weather seals on all external doors, brush seals on internal bathroom, toilet and laundry doors, exhaust fan seals and elimination of recessed down lights will all contribute significantly to reducing air leakage. Draught proofing is the necessary first step to improving the thermal performance of your home. In this workshop we will explore the many sources of drafts, and what you can do the prevent draughts.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT MONSTER PETITION

For many years, there have been calls to improve public transport to the Outer East by building a rail service to Doncaster. These calls have included both light and heavy rail options. As the community embrace the need for more sustainable transport network as part of the response to climate change, and increasing petrol prices and traffic congestion are an incentive to leave the car at home, interest in a rail service is growing, Residents of the City of Manningham and the Outer East have an opportunity to lobby the State Government to build a rail service to Doncaster by signing the Public Transport Monster Petition. The petition calls for State Government support for several key eastern public transport upgrades, including the Doncaster rail — a project first floated in 1969 yet never delivered. It asks the State Government to deliver the following:

  1. A full and public feasibility study for a heavy rail line to Rowville
  2. A greater commitment to the extension of the Metro rail tunnel from Domain to Caulfield
  3. A full and public feasibility study for an increase in capacity on the Belgrave/Lilydale and rail Glen Waverly lines
  4. Improved facilities for passengers, particularly at interchanges located in central activity districts – Ringwood, Dandenong and Box Hill
  5. Fully accessible public transport facilities and vehicles.

You will find copies of the petition permanently located in the Libraries in Manningham,or can find other sites for the petition on the council website www.manningham.vic.gov.au/monsterpetition

Sustainable Living Space Calendar of Events

FEB 11: DRAUGHTPROOF YOUR HOME

7.30pm – 9.30pm

PRESENTER: Maurice Beina- ECOMASTER

Gold Coin Donation

Draughts occur when warm air rises and is replaced by cooler air entering through cracks and gaps in your home and can lead to big energy bills and while reducing the effectiveness of your home’s insulation.  Effective weather seals on all external doors, brush seals on internal bathroom, toilet and laundry doors, exhaust fan seals and elimination of recessed down lights will all contribute significantly to reducing air leakage. Draught proofing is the necessary first step to improving the thermal performance of your home. In this workshop we will explore the many sources of drafts, and what you can do the prevent draughts.

FEB 27: ETHICAL SHOPPING

10.am- 1.00pm

Manningham Healthy Lifestyle Festival

City of Manningham – Heide Room

PRESENTER: Bernadette Thomas

Do you care about where and how the goods you but are produced? Are you interested in shopping with a conscience. Then come along to the ethical shopping workshop. We’ll discuss how to be a conscious shopper and develop shopping habits that will help you reduce the environmental and social costs of your purchases.  Topics for discussion include waste, fair trade, genetically modified food, labour and much more.

MAR 4:  YOU TOO CAN BE A GREEN DOMESTIC GOD/DESS 9.30am – 3.00pm

City of Manningham Healthy Lifestyle Festival

Manningham City Council – Function Room 3

Cost: $5

It’s easy being green when you know how! Our presenters will let you into their secrets about how to use environmentally friendly cleaning products, domestic goods and consumable items in your sustainable home. Our presentations will include Trinature products, Melrose Health organics as well as household items. Cath Connelly will inspire with the Celtic Harp.

MAR 11:  LIGHTS AND INSULATION

7.30pm – 9.30pm

PRESENTER: Maurice Beinat – ECOMASTER

Gold Coin Donation

There’s more to lighting than a ‘light’. The lights you have may not only be energy guzzlers, they could be wasting your heating and cooling through draughts and displacement of insulation.
Low voltage lights, spot lights and regular filament bulbs are all power hungry for the amount of light they produce. We will discuss the relative merits of the various types of lights and various replacement solutions for your home. We will also consider a range of insulation options for your home, including wall, ceiling and floor insulation, with respect to the appropriate R-value for where you live.

APR 17-8: DEEP ECOLOGY WORKSHOP

9.00am – 5.30pm

PRESENTER: JOHN SEED (Rainforest Information Centre)

Deep ecology is a philosophy of nature which sees that underlying the environmental crisis is the psychological and spiritual disease stemming from the illusion of separation between humans and the rest of the natural world. In this workshop we participate in a series of processes and rituals that dissolve the separation between persons and planet using music , poetry, personal sharing, experiential and creative exercises.

Cost: $200 waged / $100 unwaged

LIVING WITH THE BUSH

This is a new coalition of individuals and groups who believe that Improving community safety in the face of increasing risk from bushfires is not a choice between human welfare and environmental integrity. This is a false choice and if pursued will result in giving people a false sense of security while ignoring other more important safety measures.
“We are an independent coalition of like-minded people who love the bush and want to continue to live in it. Bushfire safety is a big part of our lives. But we also know that wanton removal of vegetation is not a panacea”.

Ivitation to Desert Women’s Business at Yulara NT

26th to 30th March, 2010

“The time has come,” says Nellie Patterson, Pitjantjatjara Elder from Central Australia (pictured above), “for us to come together as sisters, so we invite you to join with us, to come and sit, to come and listen, to witness and learn.”

This means that we come with an open heart and an open mind as we participate in activities such as bush tucker, craft, painting, singing and dancing.  And yet in doing this we will be learning much more about our sisters and how they interact with their world.

You also need to be aware that there will be a certain amount of discomfort (no comfy armchairs or showers!) Much of the time we will be sitting on the Earth so think deeply whether your body is prepared for a journey away from the supports that you are accustomed to having around.

Total cost for this cultural experience is $985, which includes money to be shared with our Aboriginal sisters, for their food and service to us. A deposit of $400 is required by 26th  January, 2010 and the balance of $585 by 5th March 2010. (No refunds after 26th January, 2010)

WALK AGAINST WARMING & HUMAN SIGN

NOTE: Please wear white or light-coloured tops and hats
The Walk Against Warming is one of Australia’s biggest days of community action on climate change. Similar Walks will be happening across the country, and across the globe as communities everywhere come together to tell their leaders they want  action for a safe climate

This December, our world leaders are gathering to decide how much they’re prepared to do about climate change.

As World Leaders are gathering to discuss what action they are prepared to take on climate change, we’ll be walking down Swanston Street to Princes Bridge, where we will form a giant Human Sign to send them a message that Australians want a safe climate future.
Join thousands of Victorian individuals and families concerned about climate change for The Walk and to form a massive human sign on Princes Bridge –  a sign so big they’ll get our safe climate message all the way over in Copenhagen.

Let’s make Melbourne’s Walk Against Warming HUGE…

12 DEC: 9.00 – 9.30pm

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL

Melbourne City Square

Bring posters, signs, candles to mark the end of the Walk Against Warming day

As part of a weekend of climate action organized with our partners at TckTckTck, people all over the world will gather at iconic and strategic locations in their communities.  Together, we will light candles of hope to stand in solemn solidarity with the citizens of the nations whose very survival is threatened by the climate crisis.

These nations are calling for a “survival pact,” for commitments by the developed world to cut emissions enough to get the atmospheric concentration of CO2 back to 350. They know the simple, mathematical truth of global warming: 350 = Survival

For other vigils and to see if there is a vigil near you that you can take part in, see: http://www.350.org/australia-map

MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS CHRISTMAS
A few years ago, I heard Rhonda Galbally from www.ourcommunity.com.au speaking about a range of ways in which we can make a difference in our community, either local or global by some of our choices that we make as we come to the Christmas festival. In the talk back that followed, people rang in and talked about the diverse ways in which they were approaching Christmas within their families and with friends. They talked about volunteering on the Day, making donations on behalf of loved ones in lieu of gifts, shopping ethically, families discussing how they might approach the question of giving. Some of the ideas for sustainable Christmas gifts included:
• Support Fair Trade suppliers eg Oxfam www.oxfamshop.org.au, www.newint.com.au
• You can buy a goat or a veggie garden or water supply for a family or community in the developing world – TEAR Australia, World Vision, OXFAM
• You can make a donation to your favourite local community agency or club
• Make a donation to your favourite Environmental / Sustainability Group
For more giving ideas, go to www.ourcommunity.com.au , and search “Christmas”

SMART GARDENS CAN BE TRAINED TO BE WATERWISE
Melburnians have adapted to water restrictions – did you know our gardens can be trained to be water wise too?
The city is experiencing one of its warmest and driest years on record, but excessive watering is not necessarily the answer to keeping the garden green. Like a baby and its bottle, plants can be gradually weaned off high water dependency. Less frequent watering forces the roots down and makes plants less reliant on surface water – making it easier for the garden to withstand those hot, dry days ahead. Many Australian native plants use clever water conservation techniques – for example, grey leaves that reflect the sunlight, hairy or rough textures that slow the movement of air over the leaf surface, or hard waxy coatings that also reduce water loss. And many also have beautiful flowers.
The Australian Plants Society Yarra Yarra will unearth some of the water saving secrets of Australian native plants at its annual Australian Plants Expo in Templestowe next month.
Gardening enthusiasts can take part in workshops to learn more about sustainable gardening with Australian plants, and hear speakers on a range of topics from designing drought-tolerant gardens to encouraging pond life. The expo will also feature a large native flower display, including orchids and eremophilas (emu bushes).
The official opening of the expo, featuring Gardening Australia’s John Patrick, will begin at 11am on Saturday 10 October.

BIKE FUTURES ‘09
Dedicated to the people who will transform our communities into bike-friendly, economically thriving and sustainable environments and the key to unlocking the solutions that government professionals and community leaders require at the local, state and national level.
Keynote speaker: Niels Tørsløv, Director of the Traffic Department at the City of Copenhagen, where he has guided the massive and unprecedented development of the bike transportation environment. Copenhagen will have 50 per cent of all trips by bike by 2020. Niels Tørsløv will show us how the Danish capital will get there.
This conference is the first in an annual series designed to assist national and local leaders, planners, designers and builders respond to the critical demands brought on by the explosion in growth of bike transportation and recreation across Australia. We all have a massive challenge ahead of us: more of our citizens are riding, and riding more often; riding in places and at times that were never envisaged; placing stresses and strains on physical infrastructure and political patience alike. Answers can be hard to come by in these resource-constrained times.

‘COUNT DOWN TO COPENHAGEN: A WORKSHOP TO DEMYSTIFY THE INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE NEGOTIATIONS’
This December, all eyes will be on Copenhagen, where world leaders will meet to strike a deal that could prevent dangerous climate change. But the details of the Copenhagen negotiations by the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change are involved and complex. Key deals will be built around issues such as financing, deforestation, emission reduction targets and adaptation.
Australia’s negotiating platform will be particularly crucial in ensuring that our regions’ forests are protected, that we provide additional – and adequate – finance for developing countries to stem their emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change, and that we set a target that sets us on a path to averting runaway climate change.
This workshop seeks to demystify the complexity of the Copenhagen talks. Climate campaigners who have played an integral role representing civil society and the environment at negotiations in past years will dissect the topics and politics of the UNFCCC, and identify the pressure points for securing a good climate deal. It will identify the thorny issues that will make or break the negotiations and the role Australia is gearing up to play. Beyond demystifying the Copenhagen negotiations, this workshop will provide a tour of the events, investigate the dimensions of the REDD and LULUCF policies, outline the minimum requirements for supporting developing countries, and put forward a strong case for strong emission cuts. Workshop participants will hear from campaigners and policy directors from World Vision Australia, Oxfam Australia, Greenpeace Australia-Pacific, The Wilderness Society, The Climate Institute and Australian Conservation Foundation. The workshop will also hear from grassroots organisers about activities planned in the lead up to Copenhagen, and do some hands-on planning for how groups and individuals can activate for the best possible outcome.
