Welcome/project update Welcome to the April Sustainable Living Space newsletter. We will endeavour to bring you information about a range of events about sustainability, both local and further afield. There is much happening out in the wider environmental sustainability circles. This month’s local events include details about the notice of an upcoming SLS Community Meeting Victoria Walks and retrofitting workshop, Deep Ecology with John Seed in April, and Community House News.
The SLS will advertise local events or activities, so please forward details to the Sustainable Living Space project@sustainablelivingspace.org.au.
Sustainable Living Space EventsSustainable Living Space Project Community Meeting – 8 AprilVictoria Walksis an exciting new non-profit organisation supported by VicHealth to promote walking for every day purposes (to shops, to school, around the neighbourhood). We want to create more vibrant, supportive, strong and sustainable communities. Victoria Walkssupports communities to make their streets and neighbourhoods better for walking (see our website for some great ideas). This can be as easy as planting a tree, having a street party, or forming a Walking Action Group (WAG) to bring real changes to your local area (such as improving crossings and slowing down traffic). Why walk?Getting more Victorians back on their feet means healthier and happier communities, vibrant local economies and a greener planet. Every journey begins with the first step!Thursday, 11 May 7.00pm – 9.00pmMaroondah Council, Braeside Ave, Ringwood Meeting Room 4WINDOWSwith Maurice Beinat There is every chance your windows are contributing to making you colder in winter, hotter in summer and poorer all year. Summer heat gain through windows is a major contributor to excessive heat within your home, and in winter around 20% of your heating can be lost through your windows. This can be even more if they don’t seal properly. In this workshop, Maurice will outline a range of options to improve your window performance including double glazing, shades, curtains and blinds.Sustainable Living Space Project Program – Term 2Deep Ecology Information Session – Kallista Community House$10 / $5Deep Ecology is a philosophy of nature which sees that underlying the environmental crisis there is a psychological or spiritual disease stemming from the illusion of separation between humans and the rest of the natural world. The late Arne Naess, Professor of Philosophy from Norway who coined the term deep ecology pointed out that our “ecological ideas are not enough to protect the Earth, we need ecologicalidentity, ecological self“. With music, poetry and film, John Seed shows us how to nourish our ecological identity and align ourselves with Earth. 2 Earth Spirit Action Deep Ecology workshop$200 / $100Human identity exists at the intersection of the ancient cycles of air, spite of the pervasive illusion of separation, in reality no separation is possible between nature and ourselves. Arne Naess, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at Oslo University, suggested that what is needed are community therapies “healing our relations to the widest community, that of all living beings”. By acknowledging our interconnectedness we invite the spontaneous healing of the psyche.Bookings: North Ringwood Community House 9876 3421More information: project@sustainablelivingspace.org.auWalking Lightly – Reduce your Ecological FootprintNorth Ringwood Community House, 120 Oban Road, North RingwoodCommunity House NewsPERMACULTURE DESIGN CERTIFICATEApril 14 – mid AugustLocal Species I.D.Become familiar with our natural landscape; learn about the beau’ful local natives and EVC benchmarks.Native Australian FoodsThere are a large range of bush foods growing in the Yarra Ranges, discover what they are, where they grow and how to use them.Seed CollectingCreate your own local na’ve seed bank and regenerate your property with our own endemic species. The initial round of submissions closed in November last year. Although the review was only open for one month and received minimal publicity 6000 people responded to it.. At the same time, Eskom plans to use the project as an excuse to raise electric rates on South Africa’s poorest citizens. U.S. officials can intervene to stop this loan prior to the World Bank’s April 6 meeting. The Review panel has released an Issues Consultations Paper along with 39 questions for the next round.
Unfortunately the paper brushes off concerns about GM, irradiation and nanotechnology in food and is misleading:
· Section 3.1 of the paper states that GM food must have a label. In fact loopholes in the current food standard means that most GM food escapes labelling.It is estimated that up to 70% of processed food contains GM ingredients. How many GM food labels have you seen?
· Section 3.11 implies that GM, nano-technology and irradiation have no public safety concerns
· Section 3.16 implies that labelling GM, nano-technology and irradiation will cause these technologies to be “inhibited”. This truly bizarre statement prompted MADGE to issue a media release saying “If, as this review suggests, GM, nanotech and irradiation only have a future if they are hidden, consumers need to be extremely concerned.”
Section 2.5 lists the objectives of FSANZ, our food standards agency responsible for food labelling, as:
(a) the protection of public health and safety;
(b) the provision of adequate information relating to food to enable consumers to make informed choices; and
(c) the prevention of misleading or deceptive conduct.
It appears to be failing on all three accounts in reference to GM food, irradiation and nanotechnologies.
There are concerns that if GM food labelling does emerge it will in fact be “non-GM” labelling. This means that ordinary food would need labelling (GM free – 0% GM or non-GM – some GM contamination allowable if accidental) while GM ingredients would be seen to be the norm and so escape labelling. The costs of testing, labelling and also the liability for being sued if food labelled either “GM free” or “non-GM” is contaminated, would lie with any farmers, food manufacturers or retailers trying to produce GM free food.
Please consider putting in a submission to the labelling review Public hearings are being held throughout Aus from March to May. Sign up to attend one here
